Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at
Heinz Grunze, MD, PhD received his medical degree in 1986 after studying in Aachen, Germany, as well as in England at Oxford and London. After a Max-Planck Institute research fellowship and his clinical training at the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Freiburg, he was appointed research fellow from 1993 to 1995 at the Neuroscience Laboratory of Harvard Medical School at the VAMC Brockton, Massachusetts.
From 1996 until 2007 Prof. Grunzewasa consultant and lecturer in the Department of Psychiatry, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität, Munich, Germany. Since September 2007, he is Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at Newcastle University, United Kingdom.
Prof. Grunze served as vice president of the International Society for Bipolar Disorders, and is a former President of the German Society for Bipolar Disorder. He serves as secretary of the WFSBP task force Bipolar Disorder and was member of the CINP taskforce on Antidepressant medication and, more recently, of the International Society for Bipolar Disorders (ISBD) Task Force on Antidepressant Use in Bipolar Disorders.
His main research interests include the neurobiology and treatment of bipolar disorder and depression, and the neurobiological effects of antiepileptic drugs and novel antipsychotics.
