Prof Gabriele Sachs is Medical Director of the Wagner-Jauregg Neuropsychiatric State Hospital in Linz, Austria. She was head of the Cognitive Clinical Neuroscience Programme at the Medical University Vienna, Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, where she also established a clinical research programme for patients with schizophrenia.
Prof Sachs obtained her PhD in 1978 from the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Vienna, and her medical degree from the University of Medicine, Vienna in 1996. She is a psychoanalyst (both in classical Adlerian psychology and group analytic psychotherapy) and behaviour therapist. Her research focuses on cognition and emotion recognition in patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, validation of new neuropsychological assessments and intervention programmes. She has researched biological and neurophysiological aspects and cognition in patients with schizophrenia using neuroimaging and EEG mapping.
She is a Principal Investigator in Austria for the EU-GEI Project 'European Network of National Schizophrenia Networks Studing: Gene-Environment Interactions'. Prof Sachs is author of numerous scientific publications including chapters and books and is serving on several editorial boards.
